Welcome to Hey Bernice!
Creative and innovative in the digital world by day…
Bernice is my alter ego…. she is a mum, blogger, interior styler, upcycler & experimental cook every other minute of the day. She can fashion nothing into something.
She finds her inspiration from ‘old stuff’ lying around. Preferring to re-use items where possible – giving them another life. There is always another use for everything if you think about it long enough.
The official term for this is upcycling. According to wikipedia the first recorded use of this term was in 1994.
Bernice’s teenage inspiration was MacGyver. Yes, I can hear you sigh at the thought of the spunky Richard Dean Anderson saving the day again, and again (sadly, she does have a signed photo of him, during the mullet stage, in storage somewhere!). Reminiscing aside, MacGyver taught Bernice that anything and everything can be useful to you, and the old saying “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is alive and well in her household.
For those still day dreaming about MacGyver, here’s a little fix for you…
“He’s the man that chooses wit over weapons” – doesn’t that make you go weak at the knees?
So, back to Bernice... over the years there has been a steady production line of creations derived from what many would call junk or rubbish … old furniture, seed pods, vintage wallpaper, 40 year-old books, old spindles or just a creative combination of items that many wouldn’t think to put together – including food. Bernice has been asked on many occasions to hold working bees, tutorials or provide recipes so others can produce their own creations – hence the birth of the ‘Hey Bernice!’ blog.
I should also mention that Bernice has some formal training behind her too…
Studying art for six years at school – sculpting, painting, photography and textiles were her favourites.
Completing a degree in Hotel Management, which involved spending two years of the degree learning commercial food production (cooking for 50+ people), and culinary techniques (fine dining cooking techniques). Hence her confidence experimenting in the kitchen… and frequently changing (she would call it improving!) recipes.
Bernice also studied Marketing on exchange at Pennsylvannia State University (USA).
More recently she completed a Masters in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship.
Looking for a less academic and more creative challenge… she is currently undertaking a Diploma of Interior Design.
Her day job is as a Senior Commercial Development Manager in the emerging business and innovation area of a large Australian Organisation, and she has spent the best part of 15 years in product development, strategy and marketing roles in Australia and London.
I’m not sure what you get when you mix such a hotch-potch of qualifications and experience together… perhaps a creative and innovative crafty person, that eats well, can develop products and knows how to market them!
Through this blog I will look forward to sharing with you my inspirations, ideas, creations, and the things I observe in the world which I hope will also inspire you to be crafty like MacGyver Bernice too.
Bin (I will also answer to Bernice, Binny, Bins or Binster but my real name is Belinda)
